Malaysian Food Fair 2010, Golflife Center - Sterrebeek

May 30, 2010

"It was the best Malaysian restaurant in Brussels. Wish we could have a Food Fair like this every day!" This was one of the comments that sums up the 2010 Malaysian Association Food Fair.

Despite the blocking of roads for the Brussels Marathon which kept many people away, the event catered to a crowd of 200 people, with frantic activity everywhere. The bar bustled with sales, the Chinese pavillion churned out an amazing array of delicacies and the Perwakilan table, graced by its President, looked exquisite with a huge variety of Malay food, not normally seen anywhere. Not to be outdone the Indian corner showcased its specialities of snack food and curries.

Satays on the grill attracted the largest crowd, proving yet again to be Malaysia’s most popular food. The humble noodle, in all forms and colours took pride of place. Taste explosions from food representing the multicultural mix ranged from intricate roti jala, and delicious popiah to the ever popular nasi lemak. Malaysia, truly multi-cultural, showcased its harmonious diversity in food. What better way to promote Malaysia!

Although the majority of people who attended the event were from various parts of Belgium, a busload of French Malaysians representing their respective associations in Paris and Lille made a big impact at the Food Fair. Languages at the event included English, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Hindi, Malay and Cantonese - to name a few - proving to be quite a challenge for MABL Committee members who looked after the Welcome Desk.

As always, there was much anticipation when the Tombola prizes were announced. Thanks to donations from Malaysian Embassy and MABL members, many guests were able to share the joy of being lucky winners!

An event of this magnitude requires much planning and organisation. Through the efficient efforts of the hardworking committee, their partners and children, the event was yet another huge success, further building MABL’s reputation to lure more people to future Malaysian events in Belgium.

No sooner is one event completed, than the committee begins gearing up for its next major event: the Gala Dinner Dance which will be a combination Deepavali and pre-Christmas celebration. We wait in anticipation!

Mabl Chinese New Year 2010 Luncheon, Golflife Center - Sterrebeek

February 28, 2010

Chinese New Year is one of the most important of the traditional Chinese Holidays. It is commonly called the Lunar New Year because it is based on the lunar calendar. No matter where in the world the Chinese people move to, there's one thing for sure: it’s a wonderful reason to celebrate.

The Chinese community of the Malaysian Association of Belgium and Luxembourg made sure that Belgium was exposed to some of the traditions of this auspicious day by coming out in full force, decked out in something red to showcase the positive chi of wealth, happiness and longevity.

Unfortunately, the weather could not be controlled. The Belgian festivities, it turned out, were held on a day that was gloomy, rainy, windy and cold. The gloom was short-lived, however, thanks to the beautiful venue which provided the backdrop for a warm and cosy atmosphere. Traditional wall decorations, loud enthusiastic greetings of kong hee fat choy and the huge windows overlooking the lushness of the Golf Club grounds helped make the weather be of no significance.

Lunch was a feast! Thanks to Connie who supervised the preparation of the scrumptious food, the tables were laden with duck, chicken, prawns, noodles and spring rolls, all cooked in the traditional Chinese-Malaysian style. The sweet delicacies that followed were so numerous that extra tables had to be set up to display the huge variety of kueh kueh to cater to the needs of the 130 people who attended the celebrations.

Guests were warmly greeted by a welcoming team which distributed mandarins as a symbolic ritual. A well-stocked bar ensured that everyone was well lubricated. Speeches were delivered by the Ambassador, Dato’ Hussein, who spoke about the role the community plays in Malaysia and by the President, Ken, who thanked the MABL Committee and welcomed the guests who had joined in the celebrations, despite the weather.

The Chinese New Year presents a wonderful opportunity to reconcile, forgetting all grudges and sincerely wishing peace and happiness for everyone.

The Malaysian Association of Belgium and Luxembourg takes this opportunity of passing this message of peace to you and to wish you all a Great Year of the Tiger.

MABL Food Fair 2009, Montensstraat - Borgerhout

October 18, 2009

Not so long ago, Lehman Brothers collapsed sending shockwaves through the global economy. A year on, has the financial sector changed? If the turnout at the MABL 2009 Food Fair was any indication, then yes! There were no signs of any financial crisis or recession. On the contrary, big signs of a fantastic recovery were everywhere: a huge turnout to start with!

The Food Fair represented the diverse cultures of Malaysia. The best of these traditional cuisines made their mark by lavish displays of food representing each ethnic group. Showcasing each cuisine made the Fair look like it was the largest Malaysian restaurant in Belgium. Each cuisine is so unique that no other country in the world can boast a similar blends of cuisine. Typical Chinese food, the flavours of India and Malay specialities had visitors visiting Malaysia without even leaving Belgium!

A turnout of more than 250 people with a truly international mix, exceeded all expectations. Catching up with old friends, making new ones, sharing great food and a enjoying a drink from a well-organised bar, all contributed to a most enjoyable day.

The Tombola tickets were a sell-out, thanks to the many donations by travel agents in Malaysia, MATRADE, the Embassy of Malaysia in Brussels, the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) in Brussels, The Word Magazine, Chinese and Indian restaurants and trading shops in Belgium. Our thanks also go to the many individual MABL members for their contributions. Sales of tombola tickets totalled €620.00, proceeds of which will be donated to the charity organization, Hospis, in Malaysia

Coinciding with the Food Fair, was Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights. This festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the transition of darkness to light. The Indian community made the day a colourful event, decked out in their sarees and other traditional gear.

One small step to an end of a recession, in one small corner of the world, was made on Sunday, 18 October when MABL pressed the reset button.

MABL Family BBQ 2009, Sijsjeslaan - Everberg

June 14, 2009

In normal circumstances, a date in June usually guarantees great summer weather for outdoor activities. With this in mind, MABL committee members locked in Sunday 14 June for the annual and traditional Family BBQ Day. But Belgian weather lived up to its reputation for being unpredictable, right up to the commencement of the event. No weather websites had received as many hits as they did for that Sunday! Finally, the weather gods heard our incessant prayers and, bang on cue, just as we were making alternative arrangements, the rain stopped, the grey clouds disappeared and the sun gave us its wonderful smile!

Once the sun appeared, everyone sprung into action! After a welcome speech by Ken, followed by an inspiring speech by His Excellency and the singing of the national anthem, it was showtime!

Malaysia arrived in Brussels as the grounds were filled with music and the sounds of dancing. The unmistakable whiff of Malaysia was in the air as all the BBQ-executive-chefs got to work, cooking a variety of meats and seafood to perfection. In true Malaysian style, the tables were groaning under the weight of a huge variety of delicacies provided by members of MABL and Tamarind Foods.

It naturally takes around 100 people to get the party going and we had more than that to get our party swinging. Faithful members, visitors, friends and lots of new members all joined in to make the event fun-filled and a big success. There were activities for everyone: for friends to get together and for dancing, joining in the fun-games or just sitting and relaxing. Children were entertained by their own jumping castle and organised games which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Everybody chipped in to make the day a huge success.

Our next event will be a Malaysian Food Fair to be held on Sunday 18 October in Antwerp.

Block the day in your diaries. Details to come shortly!

MABL High Tea 2009, De Kam, Wezembeek-Oppem

April 5, 2009

Each year members and friends of the community look forward to the annual high tea event. This year the High “The Tarik” tea event was the first event to welcome spring and a fresh opportunity for the new committee to meet and greet the members.

The event was hosted at De Kam, a quaint and charming venue, familiar to most, in the natural settings of Wezembeek-Oppem.

Guests arrived early, bearing their respective “pot-luck” specialties. Soon the two beautifully decorated center tables were filled with delicious Malaysian fusion bakes, sweets and local cuisines thanks to our guests. To compliment the delicious buffet, the famous and unique specialty “teh tarik” was offered behind the bar by our lovely hostesses.

More than 100 guests were present including children and close friends.

Our patron, His Excellency, Ambassador Dato Hussein Haniff graced us with his presence on this fine day and gave a well-rounded speech encouraging further interaction amongst MABL members and future new members.

To liven-up the atmosphere, members of Perwakilan gave a stunning “Tarian Canggung” performance. Full of grace and charm, along with its catchy and melodious music, the dance mesmerized our guests.

The MABL committee as well as volunteers and their partners were behind the scene working towards a smooth running of the High Tea event.

A Big Thank You

The new committee would like to take this opportunity to thank His Excellency, Ambassador Dato Hussein Haniff for his encouraging words, the dancers from Perwakilan group for their sparkling performance and all their guests for participating in the High “Teh Tarik” Tea event.

MABL Dinner & Dance 2008, Feestzaal Scala - Beveren

October 18, 2008

MABL Gala Dinner Dance

After months of planning and organising, the committee members were finally able to breathe a big sigh of relief at the success of the gala dinner dance held on 18 October 2008.

Situated in what appeared to be a non-descript street in the equally sedate town of Beveren in Flanders, La Scala Feestzaal, with its team of friendly and efficient staff, proved to be the perfect setting for our gala event, which had all the elements of success: glamour, food and music. Guests and members were greeted with champagne in the contemporary setting of the reception hall. This was followed by an exceptional three-course meal and seconds for anyone still hungry enough to accept! The dessert table was laden with a selection of sweets to cater for all tastes. And if this was not enough, an ice-cream stall dished out ices in all sorts of flavours and colours.

A truly Malaysian atmosphere of warmth and hospitality was created with images of Malaysia adorning the walls together with memorabilia and artifacts making for a mini-exhibition. Our guest-of-honour, Dato Hussein and Datin Sharifah, made the occasion even more auspicious. A fashion show representing the various cultures of Malaysia was appreciated by the many guests.

Generous contributions to the raffle saw almost everyone take home a prize.

Music was provided by MG Band. Their popularity was proved by stage full of gyrating people dancing to their throbbing music.

This gala event, sadly, sees the end of the presidency of Sarah V. She has poured her energies and many talents into ensuring that Malaysians, although away from home, have many festivities to remember and celebrate their homeland. Good luck, Sarah. in all you do.

MABL Deeparaya 2007, Buurthuis, Korbeek-Lo

October 28, 2007

The MABL DeepaRaya event on 28 October 2007, turned out to be an occasion to share a “deepa-friendship” for the 150 people who turned up to celebrate this happy festival with scrumptious food and friends. The exotic home-cooked delicacies included a tongue-tingling feast of Indian and Malay food taking us back to those sweet memories of home. The range and flavours on the buffet table far exceeded anything offered by any southeast or south Asian restaurant in Belgium. And if this authentic theme was not enough, out came the bar with its trump card - teh-tarik flowing like a silken cord into eagerly awaited glasses. This was indeed a fun day, with children who were each treated with their own little goodie-bags being delighted as were the happy winners of the many tombola prizes.

No matter that we were in the throes of winter; the warm atmosphere created by the blending of different cultural and ethnic groups showed that harmony and friendship can be created when people of good-will meet to work and to celebrate together.

It was a fine display of “Malaysia, truly Asia” and hopefully a foretaste of what could be: “Malaysia, the World, surely”!

Thank you to all our members and our guests for supporting us in our activities and especially for helping us bring the warmth of Malaysia to Belgium Without you there would be no MABL!

MABL Family Day 2007, Sijsjeslaan - Everberg

September 8, 2007

When you have fine weather in a Belgian September, all you need to top it off is good food, good company and lots of fun!

Well, we had all of that to overflowing on 8 September when we held the MABL Barbeque.

Tables groaned under loads of marinated, roasted meats, a delicious variety of salads and a huge array of scrumptious deserts that were brought along by the members.

The more-than-eighty members who attended the BBQ danced, sang and played party games, while the many children present had special activities and gifts that kept them squealing with delight.

A huge, huge “Thank You”, then, to ALL the members – especially to our ambassadorial patrons Datuk and Datin - without whom the day would not have been so enjoyable. Thanks, also, to those who brought the food, the experts who willingly slaved away over hot grills, those who looked after the entertainment for the under-12s and the many people who helped with the setting-up and the long clean-up afterwards.

MABL Dinner & Dance 2006, La Butte Aux Bois - Lanaken

November 4, 2006

It was a night of great splendor at the MABL Dinner & Dance 2006 when almost 100 MABL members and guests attended what was possibly the most glamorous event ever organized by MABL. In the plush settings of the La Butte Aux Bois restaurant , attendees were treated to fine food and drink, in a truly multicultural atmosphere. Some lucky winners also walked away with prizes from the lucky draw thanks to our generous sponsors.

After dinner, attendees were entertained by the rousing performance of Lady Marmelade who enthused all present to hit the dance floor and boogie the night away.
Of special mention was the opening ‘joget’ performed by H.E Dato’ Kamal and Datin Sabrina that surely set the tone for the rest of the evening; and contributed a truly Malaysian flavor to the event.

Once again all present at the MABL Gala Dinner & Dance 2006 , were treated to yet another entertaining and unique event thanks to the untiring efforts of the Organizing Committee and the support from MABL members and ‘friends of Malaysia’.

Embassy Of Malaysia - MABL Family Day 2006, Kessel lo - Leuven

September 3, 2006

The infamous Belgian weather did not deter the staff of the Malaysian Embassy in Belgium and MABL members, who braved the drizzles to participate in the first jointly organized event of this kind. The 90 odd attendees were treated to a sumptuous selection of Malaysian cuisine generously prepared by the staff of the Malaysian Embassy. It was then time for the kids in particular, to have a delightful time participating in the various games organized at the event, demonstrating to all present what fun it is to be young and carefree. The highlight of the day, was certainly the keenly contested ‘tarik tali’ competition - Malaysian Embassy Staff vs MABL Members. Following an epic ‘battle royal’ between both sides, the MABL team emerged victorious in what turned out to be a highly competitive event!

It was certainly a day when the gloomy Belgian weather took second place to the warm and bright presence of all Malaysians, and friends of Malaysia at the event.

May 14, 2006

MABL Exco members bid a fond farewell to En Zainal and family in a truly Malaysian way by feasting on the delicacies served at the Malaysia Restaurant in Antwerp: and reminiscing on delightful memories of their happy times in Belgium. It was indeed a befitting tribute to En. Zainal, who in his role as ex-officio of MABL, demonstrated not only his organizational skills but also his commitment in improving the social ties between Malaysians residing in Belgium & Luxembourg. En. Zainal will indeed be remembered by all EXCO members as personifying the Malay proverb ‘berat sama dipikul, ringan sama dijinjing’ when it came to planning and executing MABL activities. MABL members turned up in full force once again, with more than 70 members, family and friends spending a fun filled day at Parc Paradisio.

The less than perfect Belgian summer did not dampen our spirits and most of us explored the beautiful landscape of the park with gusto before meeting up for lunch, where Malaysian delicacies were shared amongst us in true Malaysian fashion. The visit to the park was especially entertaining for the children who had a roaring time at the Bird Show and at the many other park attractions.

It was definitely an opportunity for all present to get together as Malaysians, and enjoy our comraderie and friendship, in a great location!

Family Day of Discovery at Hans-Sur-Lesse Domain

Family Day 2004 provided the opportunity to discover the beauty of Belgium’s Ardennes region and its many “hidden” treasures like the limestone Caves of Han and the animal reserve. Some 60 members, their families and friends gathered at Han-sur-Lesse early on the morning of Saturday, September 4th to embark on this discovery. For members, the entrance fee to the Domain was compliments of the Association.

After Mr. Liew Chong Ho, the President, had taken a digital group snapshot, everyone enthusiastically boarded the vintage tram for the 4km-ride to the entrance of the Caves. When one realises the fact the Caves have been welcoming visitors for more than a hundred years (the centenary was celebrated in 1995), this visit is also a step into history! The guided tour enabled the discovery of the various chambers, each rivalling the others in beauty: the fascinating Mysterious hall, the Arms hall with its sound and light show and the effectively lit Dome hall. We made our way through the some times narrow passages and series of steps, admiring the wide range of concretions – stalactites, stalagmites, columns, candles, stalagmitic floors, draperies and the impressive 5-metre high stalagmite nick-named Minaret. The short boat trip on the underground river Lesse to the exit to the Caves brought our descent into the entrails of the earth to a close while the traditional cannon shot helped us appreciate the impressive resonance capacity of the gallery.

Our group then dispersed for picnic-lunch in the conducive surroundings of this open domain or to savouring the specialities of the region at restaurants that suit every budget. While the playground with its varied games and mini-farm proved just irresistible for many children.

The afternoon saw us boarding “safari cars” for the 70-minute tour of the 250 hectares of parkland covering the panoramic old Lesse valley and the opportunity to observe the wild animals that inhabit the Ardennes forest – wolf, brown bear, lynx, stag, deer, wild boar and tarpan horse among others. Following this, the afternoon was free to visit the other attractions of the Domain at leisure. The Subterranean Museum has a collection of archaeological objects found mainly in the bed of the underground Lesse river and spanning some 5,000 years of history; while the Expotheme exhibition and film explained how caves archive the history of our climate.

To the appreciation of all, this was a fun Saturday in the company of family and friends, with the added educational value of experiencing a major Belgian tourist attraction.

"Compatriots Getting To Know You" Session in Luxembourg

July 25 2004 saw MABL President, Liew Chong Ho leading a group of 3 ExCo members and 4 members from Belgium, to meet fellow Malaysians residing in Luxembourg. Meeting outside the Malaysian Embassy in Brussels, we commenced our leisurely Sunday morning drive to Luxembourg at 09h30. In spite of some 33km of single-lane traffic on highway E411 owing to road-works, we arrived the city-centre of Luxembourg without any undue hassle by 11h30. After a quick “beehoon” lunch at Restaurant Over Seas, our compatriot in Luxembourg, Ms. Perida Lemat Henry and her husband, Antoine Bernardy, graciously accompanied us for city-sightseeing on the Hop On-Hop Off Bus as well as a short walk-about to take in the impressive picturesque views of the city.

Returning to Restaurant Over Seas, we then met up with some 10 Malaysians (another 10 others being away on vacation) residing in Luxembourg, together with their spouses and children. After the usual introductions, everyone settled down to lively conversations like “old” friends – certainly emphasizing this opportunity to interact with our compatriots living just across the border from Belgium.

Mr. Liew thanked everyone for making time to attend this meet-up session on a summer Sunday. Special appreciative thanks go to Mr. Law Mun Cheong & his team for consenting to the use of his Restaurant for the afternoon. Mr. Liew then proceeded to give an overview of the aim and activities of MABL. Upon his suggestion that the Malaysians residing in Luxembourg appoint a representative to act as their liaison with MABL, Ms. Mee Choo Hoong-Miller was unanimously nominated to this position. A round of applause expressed everyone’s appreciation of Mee Choo’s (her husband, Fernand included) generous acceptance to undertake this role.

We rounded-up this “getting to know you” session in typical Malaysian fashion – partaking in a meal of delicious & especially spicy chicken & squid dishes, specially prepared by Mr. M. C. Law (Cheong to his friends).

Good-Bye, Dear Dato' & The Best of Everything

These warm and sincere wishes summed up everyone’s thoughts and emotions as they came to bid fond farewell to His Excellency Dato’ Deva Mohd. Ridzam, Ambassador of Malaysia to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union. True to Dato’ Deva’s wishes that MABL should not go to the expense of hosting a farewell upon his departure, instead the good Dato’ hosted an especially delicious Malaysian buffet lunch at his residence in Uccle, Brussels on July 21, 2004, in the company of Datin Tipah, his wife and their children.

MABL owes her very existence to the Dato’ who as our beloved Patron initiated the formation of the Association back in 2002. As a token of our sincere appreciation for Dato’s staunch support and guidance over the years, MABL President, Mr. Liew Chong Ho, presented Dato’ with a Crystal Vase – a unique piece from the Val Saint Lambert Crystal Works, established in Belgium since 1826. The Vase is appropriately personalised with “MABL 2004” on its base.

Dato’ Deva mentioned that in all his years of Diplomatic service, this is the first time that he has steered the formation of an association for Malaysians abroad and it certainly has given him real joy away from the routine of daily assignments. The fact that Belgium’s infamous rainy weather has to-date not marred any function held at his residence for compatriots, is testimony to this sincerity. The warm “Malaysian” SUN as it were, was always present to ensure the success of the event – giving the radiant atmosphere !

LATEST : Owing to unforeseen circumstances, the tour of duty of Dato’ Deva in this region has been deferred to a later date; thus for the present Dato’ remains as Ambassador of Malaysia.

Celebrating Malaysia in Belgium

Malaysian Festivities 2 on Sunday, May 9, 2004 presented just that opportunity. The afternoon roared to a start with the rhythmic drum beats and clashing of cymbals of the “Tith Ngaw Pai” – Belgium’s very own Lion Dance Troupe, as they ushered in our distinguished guests. The troupe gave an impressive acrobatic performance to the admiration of the audience, many of whom witnessing this for the very first time. For Malaysians of Chinese origin, the Lion Dance designates an auspicious welcome and hence an appropriate curtain-raiser for MABL’s Event of the Year!

MABL President, Mr. Liew Chong Ho, in his welcome address thanked everyone for their presence and support of the Association’s activities. He went on to give an overview of the festivities celebrated by the major ethnic groups who make-up the Malaysian jigsaw.

In his keynote speech, our Guest of Honour – H.E. C. Paulus, Governor of Antwerp, praised the multi-ethnic tolerance of Malaysian society and the contribution of her people to the economy of Belgium. Representing the Malaysian Embassy, were Encik Zainal Abidin Bakar, Minister-Counsellor/Deputy Head of Mission and Mr. Charles Van Es, the Honorary Consul-General of Malaysia in Antwerp.

As any Malaysian will testify, no celebration is complete without that all important glorious Food. So this event was no different. Besides our famous satay as “entrée” graciously served by students from the American International School of Ekeren; there was a pot-pourri of dishes from the cuisine of Malay, Indian & Chinese – some home-made while others coming straight from the kitchen of the Wong Kee Restaurant of Antwerp. Members and friends contributed their talents to the event by preparing a variety of Malaysian desserts. With such a delicious array of food, everyone had more than their fair share and dieting was just thrown out of the window for the afternoon !

Yet another highlight of the day was the repertoire of dances very professionally performed by the Tourism Malaysia Cultural Troupe of Frankfurt, Germany under the able co-ordination of Puan Sabariah. These dancers are semi-professionals of various Asian origins, many of them students. They have been selected by audition and undergo intensive training courses conducted by professional dancers from Malaysia. As the state of Sarawak in north Borneo was the focus of the day, the dancers fittingly began their performance with a dance depicting the warriors home-coming ceremony of the indigenous people of this state. Beautifully choreographed, the dancers had the audience glued to their seats, as they revealed dance after dance representing the various ethnic groups of Malaysia. The audience were even invited to join the dancers in doing the “joget” – the fast tempo step-dance that is often referred to as the nation’s national dance.

Thanks to the main sponsor of this Event, Malaysia Airlines, 4 return air-tickets to Kuching, capital of Sarawak “went under the hammer” with none other than MABL President, Mr.Liew conducting the auction in his usual affable manner. Funds raised from this Auction goes towards subsidizing this and other functions organised by the Association. A few table games were also humorously conducted by Mr. Liew, with winners receiving restaurant discount vouchers and a variety of other surprise gifts.

Besides an especially entertaining afternoon steeped in Malaysian tradition and hospitality, everyone went home not only with pleasant memories, but also an array of souvenirs and “give-aways”. These included Tourism Malaysia’s video CD entitled “Malaysia Truly Asia”, beaded necklaces courtesy of Sawarak Tourism Board and even Walter François’ 2004 Calendar on Malaysia in a selection of formats! MABL extends appreciative thanks to all sponsors and attendees of MF2, without whose unfailing support, this Event would not have proved to be the unqualified success that it was.
